Gender Stereotypes

Students analyzed the messages that children's toys and clothes conveyed.

In media, we have been discussing the overt and implied messages on children's t-shirts.  We've also read some articles about how toys are marketed to specific genders.  The students made some great personal connections.  We sorted toys and children's clothes into three categories: stereotypically male, stereotypically female and gender-neutral.  They expressed their opinions on the subject of whether people should have gender-neutral clothing and toys.  They even designed and created gender-neutral t-shirts.
