Scenes From Our Novel Study

After we finished reading The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis, the students created an important scene from the book.  All the characters present in the scene, and all the details mentioned in the text, were included in their projects.
The Breadwinner is a fictional story of a brave girl named Parvana.  She lives in Kabul, Afghanistan under the taliban.   She must make some very difficult decisions to be able to earn money for her family.
The soldiers take Parvana's father to jail.
Parvana, dressed as a boy, reads letters in the marketplace.

Building Wind Turbines

The island tree.
As part of our inquiry into renewable energy sources, the students worked in small groups to design and build a wind turbine.  Each member of the group had a specific job to do such as project manager, materials manager, designer and engineer.  The students worked together to develop a theme for their turbine, design the blades, build a stable tower, and find an effective position for the generator.  They had to overcome many obstacles along the way and make adjustments to their designs.  They did a wonderful job!

Candy-grams

We are raising money to support new refugee families in Canada by selling candy-grams on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.  A candy-gram is a candy and a short message that a student can write and send to anyone in our school.  Candy-grams cost $1 for two.  (You cannot buy more than 10.)  The candy-grams will be given out on Thursday, February 11th.
